Admiral Ackbar's Theme

This is a re-post from my other site. You'll have to go there to hear the song.

I know this probably sounds like a crazy idea for a song, but then again I am the guy that brought you Plastic Lover. So maybe you aren’t shocked.

Anyhow, Ole Miss is looking for a new mascot and I can think of no one better to lead the Rebels that Admiral Ackbar. Neither can the fine folks at Not A Trap. They’ve started a campaign to have the good admiral re-assigned to the leadership of the Ole Miss Rebel. I just want to do my part because I think it would be awesome, and it would give me and my friends and relatives in Mississippi something to talk about.

I may no longer be welcome in Mississippi after this song gets out or I may be asked to never do anything that approaches hip hop again. Either way, here it is. Enjoy.

Natty Lite

Ugh, time still sucks. I wish I was the guy in Cashback. Then I could tell you that there are a lot of crappy links not worth talking about as far as the WVU-Cincy game is concerned. Hey wait....never mind.

Anyhow, Texas lineman did a bad, stupid thing on his facebook page.

Les Miles didn't really mean it when he called Nick Saban the devil. I guess kind of like Saban didn't really call LSU fans coon asses.

Justin Boren still kind of holds a grudge against Rich Rodriguez. Don't we all?

Ryan Leaf is a failboat captain. Always and forever....

Al Davis, not satisfied with running one college football coach off, is looking to hire Jim Harbaugh. I would like you to stay away from one of the more quotable college football coaches, Mr. Davis! Things are much more fun with him at Stanford.

Scary Links

Yeah! Halloween! Woooooooo! Candy! Scantily clad women?....Yeah! Scantily clad women!!!!!

OK, the latest College Football Weekly podcast is up, where I completely dis UConn without even trying.

Fat White Guy has his thoughts on the WVU game....and West Virginians.

The Wire over at WMITC has a scary theme.

Brian is having a crying child contest. Hopefully we won't have any submissions.....hopefully.

Three Idiots have their predictions for the Louisville-Syracuse game up, and a great picture. It's almost over, guys. Then it's peanut butter and jelly time!

And Card Chronicle reminds us what happened last year.

Paul from Georgia Sports Blog has been very nice to link to a certain video I did several times. Glad everyone likes it!

BHGP makes us smile, and spit up coffee on our monitor, and is generally a universal distraction from work. So go be unproductive with us. Unless laughing is how you feel productive.

And then....yeah

Week 6 Blogpoll Ballot

As always, leave your comments. Change my mind about that one thing in there that is driving you crazy. I have to have the final ballot in by 10 am Wednesday.

RankTeamDelta
1Oklahoma 1
2Alabama 1
3Missouri 1
4LSU 1
5Texas 1
6Penn State 1
7Georgia 3
8Southern Cal --
9Florida 2
10Brigham Young 1
11Vanderbilt 7
12Texas Tech 5
13Ohio State 1
14Michigan State 2
15Utah 2
16North Carolina 8
17Kansas 2
18Virginia Tech 1
19Boise State 2
20Oklahoma State 1
21TCU 5
22California 4
23Pittsburgh 3
24South Florida 12
25Northwestern 1

Dropped Out: Auburn (#20), Wisconsin (#22), Fresno State (#23), Mississippi (#25).

Risers:
Oklahoma because they just keep winning big and Alabama didn't quite impress against Kentucky. Georgia moving up is a re-evaluation of just who they lost to as compared to Florida and USC, and for showing a lot of heart in the second half to pull back against Alabama. Vanderbilt is overvalued at #11. I know it, you know it, and they probably know it. Winning ugly is a gift, though. And as long as they keep doing it, I'll keep them up there. Where would Michigan St. be if they didn't lose to Cal? Problem is, they lost to Cal. Still, I'm not so sure they aren't a better team than OSU. Get ready, ACC. North Carolina is coming, and hell's coming with them.

Fallers:
Should I be down on Penn St. for not winning big @ Purdue? Texas over Colorado was just more impressive. Texas Tech is another re-evaluation. We'll find out about them soon enough. Kansas, I just want you to know that that was Iowa State you were playing. M'kay? South Florida, you disappoint. Really!

Thursday Coal Tattoo Is Cha-Cha-Changing

Hola, amigos! It's been a while since I rapped at ya. I decided that likeness of Jesco White was a curse on our season and curse on my ability to score a respectable high. So for any of you that were wondering why we got off to such a bad start this year, please accept my apology. It's totally my fault. That pig fucker, Jesco, couldn't even score any real drugs. But I got ya covered, ole pal!

If you were going to compare this West Virginia team to any team in history, you wouldn't have to look to far or out of conference to come up with a perfect match. I'm holding off on the hopeful Mountaineer baby pictures for now. But I'm not taking anything off the table either.

The nice thing about the loss to ECU is that chances are very slim I will have to do another CFB song about WV. The bad news is that I totally missed out on giving Maryland a bag of shit for their loss last weekend.

Along those lines, chances are that I won't be doing a College Football Songbook this weekend. I'm still holding out hope that either the games on Thursday or Friday will be noteworthy. But I'll be leaving for Colorado on Sunday, so if it doesn't happen early, it won't happen at all this week. I will be shooting live from a tailgate in Boulder, though. As I have worked out a deal with the Songpull group I met out there this spring to all write a song around the WV-CU game. Since there won't be much editing to do, those songs should go up the following Friday.

While we're on the subject of sports songs, check out Ryan Parker. The possibility is out there that we might work together or go head to head on some CFB game this year.

Grothe wants paid for those 350 jerseys of his that were sold this year and the week three prop bets go up about 9 am over at FanHouse.

Remembering 9/11. Very much so. Michael Bolton...

And just because....

Thursday Coal Tattoo Uses a Different Picture

And we use this picture because Black Heart Gold Pants is all grows up now. While celebrating their 1st birthday, they have asked several blogs to comment on what BHGP means to them. My response is here. And if it sounds like I'm being too nice, it's because they really are that good. Congrats, fellas!

Yup, WVU's defense needs to get off the field with better play on third down. I threw out my excuse for why they allowed so many yards against Villanova. It explains a little bit, but still the Mountaineers will need a better performance this week to win.

If anyone deserves to lose their BCS status, it's the ACC. While the Big East had a bad week, the ACC has had a bad century so far.

Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just telling you what The Trev thinks. I hope Stew shows the video to the team every day before practice.

Just in case your wondering how Colorado is preparing for West Virginia. They might ask to have a 7 on 7 drill before it's all over.

If your cock is Smelly, you might play for South Carolina.

Time to get to work. Enjoy your Thursday night defensive struggle.

Nice First Weekend

What a great weekend of football! Especially if you don't like the ACC. Which I don't! The Big East wasn't much better if at all as we didn't beat a 1-A team in any of our chances. But that didn't stop me from making fun of the ACC with the latest Songbook. Enjoy, and I'll get the week 1 blogpoll up for your critisizm this evening if not before.

Make Your Own Schedule

From Wizard of Odds: This is pretty awesome. I doubt it will look very good embedded in my blog. Nope, it sure didn't. Anyway, you can make a helmet schedule for just about anyone in college football. Well, 1-A college football. Get to it now! You know you want to.

Also, if you aren't listening to EDSBS Live you are missing stuff like this:

Thursday Coal Tattoo

You owe more than you have? Better grab a shovel and head down to the mine, son.

Story from Detroit Rock City Free Press- Michigan to pay $2.5 of $4 million buyout.
Rodriguez will pay $1.5 million, spread over three years, beginning in 2010. U-M said it will pay the balance of the sum, $2.5 million, immediately and cover Rodriguez’s legal fees later.
A little disappointing in that most West Virginia fans would rather know that the total amount was coming straight out of RRod's pocket. But we'll take it. Right?

Why settle now? Apparently someone was not in the mood for being deposed or releasing documents.
Either someone just agreed to pay for him (unlikely as he probably has had at least partial backing all along), Michigan finally told him to pay (more likely since the upcoming depositions of Michigan President and A.D. were finally going to drag them into this), or Rodriguez wanted to settle for personnel reasons such as the upcoming season/wanting it to end/wanting to make West Viginians happy (no).
What's the net gain for West Virginia after all this is said and done? Don't look for a link to be appearing anytime soon. I have no idea, but I'll be talking with someone tomorrow that might know. Or at least have a good idea.

And who's the most pissed off person in Michigan right now? Probably John Beilein!
Beilein's first payment was made this past spring, and at the time he added a letter warning he might still contest it at a later date. A very obvious statement that if Rich Rodriguez was able to get out of his buyout, he would use that precedent to fight.

Rodriguez agreeing to pay, removes that possibility for Beilein. The fact that Michigan is also going to pay for over half the buyout plus Rodriguez's legal fees also has to gnaw at Beilein just a bit. It is just human nature. That total paid by Michigan could be close to $3 million by the time the billable hours are tallied, or nearly double Beilein's own negotiated buyout.

Michigan refused to pay any of Beilein's buyout to WVU, stating that was not their problem.
Sucks to be at a football school, huh?

There's a blog for pretty much everything, including the Rodriguez vs. WVU case. Wish I would have seen that sooner. But maybe my answer will come from there if things don't pan out tomorrow.

So now that this all seems to be in the bag, is this the end?
My biggest question is whether West Virginians will finally let this go. One headline today read: "Rich Rod Will Pay!" A degree of bitterness is understandable, but a football coach leaving for a higher-profile job should never be the top news story in the state for months on end. There will no doubt be celebration today, but it's time for everyone, from Gov. Joe Manchin on down, to move on already.
I agree whole heartedly with that statement. This whole mess has been painful to watch. I'm 100% glad we got the money, and I suppose it's worth it. But I hope we learned something from it. Not just as West Virginia fans, but as fans of college football. I hope that we never put someone, be it a coach or a player, on such a high perch again. So we don't become so emotionally attached to anything but the school we root for again. I hope also that Arkansas, Alabama, and yes Michigan were taking notes. Because the silliness coaches have been getting away with over the past decade needs to end. I know at least someone in Tennessee was watching.
I applaud West Virginia for going after Rodriguez for breaking a contract extension that he’d signed just a year before bouncing for Ann Arbor. More universities need to follow West Virginia’s lead. I’ve long found it grossly unfair that players are held to their commitments and lose a year of eligibility for transferring schools, while coaches are basically mercenaries and are free to take any job they chose, regardless of contracts they’ve signed. West Virginia took this as a personal affront and they decided to go after their money and I don’t blame them.
OK, let's all go back to being fans of the game now!

Let's Go!.....................Mountaineers!

APR Working It's Way Into Contracts

Although West Virginia hasn't had a problem in Football or Basketball with the APR, it doesn't mean we shouldn't be concerned about it. UAB and Washington St. lost football scholarships this year because of poor academic performance. Since the APR probably won't go away, what do you do about it? Who should be held accountable? In Sylvester Croom's new contract, there's language pertaining to APR.

"Byrne wouldn't say exactly what the contract language entails. But it would
likely protect the school in case of a doomsday APR scenario: a program incurs
significant scholarship losses or, worse, the dreaded death penalty. "

To my knowledge, and the knowledge of the writer of that piece, this is the first time a contract has had language regarding APR in it for a coach. And what is unclear to me in this case, or at any university, is what are the schools doing to assist. Although it doesn't seem like Croom is on the hook for anything but, as they say, a doomsday scenario. I think if you're going to hold someone accountable, you also need to give them the tools to succeed. I know I'm not leading the pack with that statement, but it is the one aspect of APR that seems to be talked about the least.

Hate them or not, Beilein and Rodriguez both pushed for updated academic facilities for their teams. Something that should benefit West Virginia in the near future. But not everyone in the country is an up and coming program like West Virginia. They mostly don't have the facilities to compete at the highest level. They don't have the money for top flight academic facilities. They aren't choosing from the cream of the crop as far as student athletes go, either. What I'm really working toward here is what are the conferences doing to assist schools in meeting APR requirements? A quick search netted zero results for what the Big East does to assist it's member schools. I should emphasize quick search, since that's all I have time for right now. But it's in the conferences best interests to assist it's member schools. I think it's also in the best interests of society for the schools, conferences, and the NCAA to expend resources toward this goal. I mean, if it's important enough to take away scholarships, shouldn't it also be important enough to make every effort to ensure that these kids are getting the kind of education they need to succeed in life?

I know Orson wasn't really going in the same direction I am with this in his beautiful piece yesterday, but his words have meaning to me with regards to these kids we cheer for. These kids we judge. These kids we throw away too easily, sometimes.

"I know some college football players come from similar neighborhoods, black
and white. Those of you blessed with impulse control, discipline, and a solid
ethical foundation didn’t pull it from the aether; it came to you via a series
of benefactors, witting or unwitting, who helped you become the person you
are.

There are places, though, where these benefactors do not exist. In some
cases sport and coaching provides it for them. I don’t think every coach is
sincere when he says he loves his kids; there are liars, charlatans, and
lizard-brained reptiles in coaching, just as there are in every profession.
Above all, the M.O. remains winning, winning, and winning, especially the higher
up you go in college football’s hierarchy.

Yet I think there are some who genuinely, above all else, care deeply
about helping kids–and deny it or not, but at 18 you remain an infant in an
adult’s body."
